Why Real Estate + Interior Design Were Always Meant to Go Together

Why Real Estate + Interior Design Were Always Meant to Go Together

People often ask me how I balance being both a real estate agent and the owner of a design and build renovation company. Truthfully, to me, they have never felt like two separate careers. They naturally overlap in almost every part of what I do.

Real estate was never just about buying and selling homes for me. It has always been about potential. About walking into a space and instantly seeing what it could become. About understanding how people live in their homes, what makes a space feel welcoming, and how thoughtful changes can completely shift the way a home feels.

That same mindset is what led to the creation of Willoak Homes.

At Willoak, we focus on design-forward renovations that feel elevated, timeless, and lived in. Spaces that are beautiful, but also functional. Homes that feel personal to the people living in them, not just trendy for the sake of being trendy. We are prairie rooted in our approach, intentional with our designs, and deeply invested in creating spaces that people genuinely love coming home to.

And honestly, being immersed in both industries has made me stronger in each of them.

As a real estate agent, I am constantly helping clients look beyond what is right in front of them. Sometimes that means helping buyers see past outdated finishes to recognize an incredible layout, location, or opportunity. Other times it means helping sellers understand which updates are actually worth investing in before listing, and which ones are probably not going to give them the return they were hoping for. Spoiler alert: not every renovation needs to involve tearing down walls on HGTV style deadlines while surviving solely on iced coffee and stress.

Having a design and renovation background allows me to guide those conversations from a different perspective. I understand construction timelines, finishes, functionality, and what actually adds value both emotionally and financially. I can help clients bridge the gap between “this house works for us” and “this house feels like us.”

I also think it changes the way I market homes.

Presentation matters. The way a home feels when someone walks through the front door matters. The details matter. Sometimes it is not about spending a fortune. It is about understanding how to create warmth, flow, light, and connection within a space. Those small details often become the reason buyers emotionally connect to a home in the first place.

At the core of both businesses is the exact same thing: people.

Big life transitions. Growing families. Fresh starts. Hard seasons. Exciting chapters. Homes hold so much of our lives inside them, and I never take that lightly.

Whether I am helping someone buy their first home, preparing a property for market, walking through renovation ideas, or designing a space from the ground up through Willoak Homes, my goal is always the same. I want people to feel supported, educated, and genuinely cared for throughout the process.

With honesty, heart, and usually a little bit of humour along the way.

Because at the end of the day, it has never been just about houses for me.

It is about helping people create a home that feels like theirs.

Sincerely, Samantha
